Disability Stories – Spina Bifida

Posted by

Hi all, my name is Sara and I was born with something called Spina Bifida.

Woman with great big smile and smiling eyes

Did you know that Spina Bifida (SB) literally means “split spine?” In very broad terms it means that my spine failed to close properly within the first few weeks of pregnancy. Yep, that soon! Often before a woman even knows she’s pregnant.

There is so much information on SB, I couldn’t possibly share it all here. But I really encourage you to learn more about it & the people it impacts; both directly & indirectly. We’re pretty awesome!😉

One thing I do want to share, is that SB is often referred to as the Snowflake condition, as no two cases are the same. As for me, I am able to walk, though I do utilize my cool camouflage AFO braces at times.

The biggest way that SB personally affects me, is with my bladder/bowel. Believe me, I’ve had my fair share of embarrassing moments as a child. And if I’m being totally honest, plenty of them in my adulthood as well. I did make it through each & every mortifying incident.

Even if some of those times were spent crying in a stall, alone in the girl’s bathroom, I did get through it. Although, I can’t help but think just how much help having a mentor could’ve been during those crucial times of my life. I didn’t even meet another person like me, until I was in my 30’s!

There is so much power in knowing that you’re not alone! Which is my hope now. That anyone born with SB never has to walk, roll, dance, or stroll this SB path alone.
