At Disability Pride Alberta, we believe in the importance of connection. That’s why we’re excited to share information about community access programs for people with disabilities.

What are community access programs?

Community access programs ensure that everyone is valued and welcomed to participate in our communities.

That’s important because people with disabilities can be at risk of isolation. Having a disability can make it hard to find a job. It can limit your access to transportation. It might also mean that you need a supportive living arrangement.

These barriers can add up and make it hard to participate in society.

Fortunately, there are lots of supports for people with disabilities in Alberta.

For example, the Alberta Government offers a variety of supports and programming for people with disabilities.

One of the supports offered by the Alberta Government is the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program. PDD provides funding for individuals to connect with the community on a regular basis. This includes publicly funded community access programs that facilitate activities such as arts, recreation, education, and volunteer opportunities.

Community access is important for everyone. In Alberta, there are community access programs for people with all kinds of disabilities. Some of these programs are government funded and some of them are run by independent non-profit organizations.

What are some examples of community access programs?

Community access programs describe a wide range of opportunities for community involvement.

Here are some examples of great community access programs in Alberta:

What’s the impact of community access programs?

The impact of community access programs is overwhelmingly positive. But don’t take our word for it. Here are some inspiring quotes from people who use community access programs to keep actively engaged in their communities:

“It’s a great program. I get to visit with people, and they teach you how to make stuff.”  — Jeff, participant at National accessArts Centre

“I love my program because I get to do different things like ride the treadmill, go for walks, and ride the bike.” — Candy, participant at CSCO

“It gets me out and about. I enjoy the work aspect of it and interacting with other participants.” — Jeremy, participant at the Venturers Society of Calgary

A Way of Being

At Disability Pride Alberta, we believe community access is about more than programs and funding. It’s a way of being.

The spirit of inclusion is all around us. It’s smiling at your neighbour, going for a walk with a friend, and lending a helping hand at the grocery store.

Let’s stay connected and grow our communities.
