Disability Pride Parade 2018

We want to THANK YOU for Disability Pride

June  3, 2018

Thanks to everyone who came to Disability Pride 2018! The event was a huge success with over 1000 people filling the streets of Calgary to celebrate people with disabilities!

The event began with a warm welcome disability advocates Kiran Dhaliwal, Brad Robertson, Irfan Sabir, and Kelly Good Eagle. The excitement was palpable as the parade began to make its way down Stephen Avenue. At each intersection the parade was greeted by Disability Pride volunteers and members of the Calgary Police Service, Fire Department and EMS.

Colourful banners and posters were on display with inspiring messages like:

“What makes you different is what makes you beautiful”

“Everyone has the right to experience love, care and respect”

“There is power in our people”

“Sassy, proud and disabled”

“Inclusion starts with you”

“I am AWESOME”

Violinist Aleksandra Danicic welcomed the parade to Olympic Plaza with a lively set of fiddle tunes. A healthy and delicious lunch was served as people gathered around the plaza amphitheatre.

Emcees celebrated the Calgary Disability Action Hall’s 20th anniversary and welcomed local political leaders and innovators to the stage to share words of inspiration.

The STAR Division of the Youth Singers of Calgary continued the celebration with a fun and heartwarming performance. Local roots act the Sadlier Brown Band finished off the afternoon with a rockin’ set that had people singing, dancing, moving and grooving.

Thank you to everyone who took part in Disability Pride 2018.

Your participation shows the world that our community is strong, loud and proud.
